Moving Into a Los Angeles Apartment? Check Delivery Access Before Moving Day
· LA Rental Tours
You’ve chosen an apartment and started planning where everything will go. Before booking movers or ordering a sofa, there’s another detail to confirm: how your belongings will get from the delivery vehicle into your new home.
Room dimensions are only part of the picture. Building entrances, elevator doors, hallway turns, and delivery arrangements can affect your plans. Use this checklist to organize those details before moving day.
Confirm when you can receive deliveries
Ask the leasing team when you will receive your keys and when moving or furniture deliveries are permitted. Avoid scheduling a delivery based only on an expected lease start date.
Find out whether the property requires advance notice, a designated arrival window, or a reservation for a service entrance. Ask whether any move-in charges, deposits, or documents apply. Requirements vary, so get the instructions for your specific community rather than relying on a previous apartment’s procedures.
Check where the vehicle can stop
Give the property team an accurate description of the vehicle you expect: a moving truck, a rental van, or a furniture delivery vehicle.
Ask where it can stop for unloading, whether that location needs to be reserved, and which entrance the crew should use. Don’t assume a driveway, garage entrance, or nearby curb will be available.
Share the confirmed instructions with the mover or retailer before delivery. If the unloading location is some distance from the entrance, ask the provider whether that affects its service or quote.
Measure the complete delivery route
A sofa that fits your living room still needs to reach it. Record the usable openings along the delivery route, including the building entrance, apartment entrance, and any interior doors the item must pass through.
For an elevator, check the door opening and interior dimensions. Note narrow hallways, sharp turns, low clearances, and stair landings where relevant.
Compare those measurements with the item’s delivery dimensions—not just its assembled dimensions. Packaging, removable legs, and separate components can change the space needed. Send photographs and measurements to the delivery provider if anything looks tight; measurements alone do not guarantee a successful delivery.
Confirm elevator arrangements
If your delivery will use an elevator, ask whether it needs a reservation and whether a particular elevator is designated for deliveries.
Confirm the reservation length, how the delivery crew gains access, and who to contact if the elevator is unavailable. If the retailer provides an arrival range rather than an exact time, explain that to the property team before making the reservation.
Ask the delivery provider what happens if the appointment cannot proceed, including any rescheduling charges.
Understand where the delivery service ends
“Delivery” can describe different services. Before paying, confirm whether the order will be left at a designated exterior location, the building entrance, your apartment entrance, or inside a selected room.
Also ask whether assembly, packaging removal, or removal of an old item is included. If you need assistance beyond the delivery point, arrange it in advance.
Choose a service that fits your access needs rather than assuming you will be able to move heavy items yourself.
Plan the room without blocking access
Mark proposed furniture positions on a floor plan or use removable tape where appropriate. Allow for doors, drawers, and cabinets to open, and check the routes between rooms.
Consider your own access requirements and those of anyone who will use the apartment. A furniture arrangement should work for everyday life, not simply fit within the room’s perimeter.
Keep one move-in information sheet
Put the address, apartment number, confirmed delivery entrance, reservation details, and relevant contact numbers in one document. Share it with everyone involved.
Keep the property’s instructions and the delivery provider’s confirmation together. A few checks before moving day can help you identify problems while there is still time to adjust your plans.
