Will Your Furniture Fit? An Apartment Layout Checklist for Los Angeles Renters
· LA Rental Tours
An apartment’s advertised square footage can help you narrow your search, but it doesn’t tell you exactly how your furniture will fit. Two apartments with similar overall dimensions can offer very different options for your bed, sofa, dining table, and workspace.
Before choosing your next Los Angeles apartment, compare the space you can actually use—and check how your furniture will get inside.
Measure the furniture you plan to keep
Start with your largest pieces. Record the width, depth, and height of your bed frame, sofa, dresser, dining table, and desk.
Measure the full bed frame rather than relying on mattress size. Headboards, footboards, and upholstered sides can extend beyond the mattress. For a reclining sofa or an office chair, include the space needed to use it comfortably.
Keep the measurements in one note on your phone so you can use the same reference at every property.
Ask for dimensions of the specific apartment
A floor plan is a useful starting point, but confirm whether it represents the apartment you’re considering. Ask the leasing team for room measurements or permission to measure during your visit.
Pay attention to features that interrupt otherwise usable space: columns, angled walls, built-in cabinets, radiators, and door openings.
If a measurement is unavailable, mark it as something to confirm. Avoid treating a photograph or virtual tour as proof that a large piece will fit.
Plan the room around everyday use
Fitting a sofa against a wall is only part of the decision. Consider how you will move between the entrance, seating area, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom.
Check whether furniture would interfere with doors, drawers, closets, or access to windows. Leave room to use dining chairs and reach storage.
If you use a mobility device or have particular access needs, assess the clear space and turning room against your own requirements. Confirm the actual layout rather than relying on a general description.
Check your workspace and outlets
If you work from home, identify a practical desk location before committing. Consider nearby outlets, daylight, glare on your screen, and what will appear behind you during video calls.
Ask about internet service options and where a connection would enter the apartment. A room may accommodate your desk while placing it inconveniently far from the connection or available outlets.
Think about other everyday equipment too, including lamps, chargers, and televisions.
Review the delivery route
Furniture must fit through the building as well as inside the apartment.
Ask about entrance widths, elevator dimensions, stairs, tight turns, and the apartment doorway. For large items, your delivery company may need several measurements to assess whether delivery is possible.
Confirm whether the property requires an elevator reservation, designated delivery hours, or other arrangements. Ask where the delivery vehicle can stop and whether any building-specific paperwork is needed.
Compare layouts before replacing furniture
An apartment that works with furniture you already own may help you avoid unexpected replacement costs. If a favorite piece won’t fit, include that decision in your moving budget before applying.
Make a simple sketch for each shortlisted apartment. Label your largest pieces and any measurements that still need confirmation.
